When I met my wife Lori Hibbett in 2010, her Flickr screen name was Olancha Peak. She taught wilderness survival for 10 years through UCLA Extension in the Southern High Sierra, not far from Olancha Peak.

We didn't have to drive thousands of miles, spend days and thousands of dollars on travel, or worry about weather upsetting our plans. We went to Death Valley for wildflowers and night photography, and the solar eclipse (55% in Death Valley) was a nice bonus!

We loved seeing the sun's corona in 2017, but the cost for 4 minutes of fun, and the risk that you still might not get it... the cost to benefit ratio of traveling thousands of miles for mediocre odds of four minutes of an experience didn't seem like a great use of our time, especially while Death Valley was spectacular just down the road from us.
