I spent the holiday weekend down in San Diego with my Mom. Living 3,070 miles from home is tough, but it also makes me very thankful for what little time we do get to spend together.

We headed up to Torrey Pines State Reserve north of the city to check it out and do a little hiking. Some of the features there reminded me of a cross between the Badlands in South Dakota and Bryce Canyon NP, pretty cool, but this park was FULL of people. It probably didn't help that it was a holiday weekend. The density of people in Southern California never ceases to amaze me - and high population density doesn't usually make for a happy landscape photographer. My Mom wasn't too keen on the marine layer or the population density either, so we headed out to the desert to dry out. Talk about a complete contrast!

Sunrise is REALLY EARLY on the east coast (especially when you haven't converted from pacific time...), but it was totally worth it. I got to get out and shoot with some of my landscaping buddies in Rhode Island and visit one of my old haunts.

I'm looking forward to taking a quick trip up to Sonoma County's coastline in the coming weeks to (hopefully) catch the lupine in bloom with some sea stack action in the background. :)
