At the intersection of Broad and Berks in Philadelphia, PA, there used to be Monument Cemetery. Today, thousands of cars and a plethora of students at Temple University cross this intersection without having any idea of what used to be of the location; there, 28,000 loved ones used to rest underground. Temple University needed parking space, so around the summer of 1956, the university began taking every body out of its grave and transporting all of them to a mass grave in a location northeast of Philadelphia. The remaining headstones were thrown underneath the Betsy Ross Bridge, hidden along the Delaware River’s shores.
Over Spring Break, I went with two of my best friends to these shores. We parked my car in a desolate, creepy, industrious part of Philadelphia, climbed over a broken fence, walked through the woods past an urban camp of 10 tents, and eventually found the shore littered with broken glass and tombstones partially submerged underneath the Delaware’s mucky water. Unfortunately, we went at high tide. It is said that there are still hundreds sitting along this section of the Delaware. The tombstone in the picture belonged to what seemed like a husband and a wife, both with birth dates leading back to before 1820.
The bridge in the background belongs to NJ Transit; it takes passengers from Philadelphia to Atlantic City, NJ on an express train. Hm, the things people don’t know they pass on the way to partying and having a good time…
