It was a thrill for me to come across this rare species. At this time of year I look very closely at insects which look like bumblebees, since there a number of hoverfly species which are good mimics. This one drew my attention because it was flying around a trunk of an old horse chestnut tree. Since they lay eggs in the cavities of mature trees, this was probably a female trying to find a suitable site. HFDF!
