As part of our 2013 visit we did an 11 night road trip from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town down the Garden Route.
The trip included 2 Nights at the Dungbeetle River Lodge, Colchester just outside Addo Elephant National Park, a 2 night stay at Sibuya Game Reserve in Kenton-on-Sea, 2 nights in St Francis, 3 nights in Knysna at the Knysna Belle on Leisure Isle, 1 night at Whales Way on the oceanfront at Wilderness, 1 night in a cottage at De Hoop (wish we had stayed longer here). Then on to Erinvale, Somerset West, Cape Town for the remaining part of our trip to stay with friends.
This trip took in some great places to stay and watch birds/wildlife and also included some golf at St Francis Links at St Francis, and Pezula and Simbola in Knysna for my husband.

Dungbeetle River Lodge, Colchester, Eastern Cape - a birdwatchers paradise on a riverside location.
Dungbeetle River Lodge is a riverside property with terraced gardens that run down to The Sundays River with views across to a pristine riverbank and the Alexandria Dune Fields which cover the 3km between Dungbeetle River Lodge and the Indian Ocean. Formed almost 6½ million years ago, Alexandria Dune fields is the largest coastal sand dune field in the southern hemisphere.
The lodge is a 10 minute drive to Addo Elephant National Park via the Mathyolweni Gate, and therefore makes an excellent base to visit the park. The owners/managers Derek and Etta Hewit are qualified game/nature guides and we organised a full days guided tour into Addo Elephant National Park - worth doing to get the most out of your visit.
We had booked 2 nights accommodation in The Africa Suite - one of 2 rooms with direct river views with private balconies from where you could enjoy fantastic views and watch the abundance of birdlife in the garden and along the riverbanks below.
Breakfasts - taken on the decking overlooking the gardens and river - were amazing with home made breads and jams, and plenty of options including a cooked breakfast to set you up for the day. As you sat eating breakfast you could watch the birdlife around you.
