The pair of Yellow-throated Vireos (yup, the ones that were not Yellow-breasted Chats) turned out to have constructed a nest directly overhead and not 10 feet distant from where our vehicles were parked at the shelters at Dolan Falls Preserve. While they seemed to take notice of our presence, they didn't appear to be stressed as they took turns throughout the day sitting on the eggs. Still incubating when we departed at the end of our four-day stay.

A year ago in this same location (and throughout the region) there was a minor irruption of Yellow-breasted Chats, with dozens of the birds hanging out and raising a ruckus all around our shelter area. So when I saw this bird and its mate, I just assumed more of same. Only once I got home and took a closer look on the big monitor did I realize not only was it not a chat but it wasn't even in the same family. Which immediately brought to mind what my birder friend Tom admonished years ago: You have to bird 'em all.

Once again, as luck would have it, I found myself at the cleanest river in Texas on the first Saturday of the month, bath day. Dolan Falls on the Devils River, Val Verde County, Texas.
