Von der vom Aussterben bedrohten Schwarzpappel gibt es in ganz Deutschland nur noch rund 3000 Exemplare. Der schnell wachsende Riese ist so selten geworden, dass er auf der Roten Liste bedrohter Pflanzenarten steht. Der Rhein-Kreis Neuss, die Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald in Dormagen und die Forstgenetik des Landesbetriebes Wald und Holz NRW haben jetzt ein Projekt zur Arterhaltung gestartet, um das Überleben der seltenen Baumart langfristig zu sichern.
Im Zonser Grind - seit 1976 Naturschutzgebiet - sind dabei 107 reine Schwarzpappeln von den Experten identifiziert worden. Das ist rund ein Fünftel der Schwarzpappelbestände in ganz NRW.

Die Schwarzpappel ist extrem selten geworden, weil die Fluss-auen trocken gelegt worden oder hinter Deichen verschwunden sind. Zu schaffen machen dem Baum zudem heimische Pappeln, die verstärkt gepflanzt werden und die Kreuzung mit solchen Sorten. "Die Hybridpappel ist keine heimische Baumart. Sie ist durch Kreuzung der heimischen Schwarzpappel mit einer amerikanischen Pappelart entstanden", erklärt Lydia Schulze vom Landesbetrieb Wald und Holz NRW. "Schwarzpappeln streben eher knorrig und krumm nach oben. Ganz anders, als die für die Holzindustrie interessanten geraden hohen Hybridpappeln."
Weil das Holz leicht ist, fertigen zum Beispiel die Holländer Holzschuhe und Obstkisten aus Pappelholz. Das Holz hat den Nachteil, dass es sehr weich ist. Dabei wussten die alten Maler gerade dies zu schätzen, erzählt Elmar Schmidt am Rande: "Immerhin ist eines der berühmtesten Gemälde der Welt auf Pappelholz gemalt - die Mona Lisa von Leonardo da Vinci."

There are only around 3,000 specimens of the black poplar, which is threatened with extinction, left in all of Germany. The fast-growing giant has become so rare that it is on the Red List of Threatened Plant Species. The Rhein-Kreis Neuss, the German Forest Protection Association in Dormagen and the forest genetics department of the NRW State Office for Forest and Wood have now started a project to preserve the species in order to ensure the long-term survival of the rare tree species.
In the Zonser Grind - a nature reserve since 1976 - 107 pure black poplars were identified by the experts. This is around a fifth of the black poplar stands in all of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The black poplar has become extremely rare because the river floodplains have been drained or disappeared behind dikes. The tree is also troubled by native poplars, which are increasingly being planted, and by crossing them with such varieties. "The hybrid poplar is not a native tree species. It was created by crossing the native black poplar with an American poplar species," explains Lydia Schulze from the North Rhine-Westphalia State Office for Forestry and Wood. "Black poplars tend to grow upwards in a gnarled and crooked manner. Completely different than the straight, tall hybrid poplars that are interesting for the wood industry."
Because the wood is light, the Dutch, for example, make wooden shoes and fruit boxes from poplar wood. The wood has the disadvantage that it is very soft. The old painters appreciated this very thing, says Elmar Schmidt in passing: "After all, one of the most famous paintings in the world is painted on poplar wood - the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci."
