Rhiwbach is an old ruined slate mine in the remote midst of Snowdonia's mountains. Perhaps more than other derelict sites this one looks most like a long lost city.

I arrived very early in the middle of the first of two very heavy showers. Looking up at the Dark shape of the first quarry, I really didn't fancy the ascent from Cwm Penmachno. It's a killer when your legs and lungs haven't warmed up after a week of nothingness in the office. But luck favours the brave and we set off up. It always looked like it might pour again, with heavy dark clouds coming in and covering the sun most of the time. But every so often, aided by a strengthening wind, a small part of sky opened briefly enough to let the sun illuminate the landscape, in fast moving patches of strong light. We had to be quick, several times missing a lovely patch just because we had put the camera back in its bag. Even if we could unzip the bags and yank the camera out, at lightning speed, sometimes we were still too slow.

Last of the series of shots from the Elan Valley. I had to resort to light painting the Craig Goch Dam as it was so dark that without it there would be no foreground interest

Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Same bridge, different direction. Taken from the minaret of the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque. Well worth the entrance fee for the mosque and minaret climb, and the mosque advisors are so helpful to us togs, although a tip for anyone venturing there.

Don't climb the minaret with a backpack on. If you meet anyone coming down it's impossible to pass or even turn round in the spiralling stone tower. I had to descend backwards a third of the height... this is a public information notice for any accident prone togs you may know.
