This is the photo I was most pleased with from the recent trip to the Somerset coast. There's already some info about how this wreck got to be here with a previous photo in my photostream. In typical local council fashion, in 2003, Sedgemoor District Council threatened to remove the wreck from the beach fearing it could be held liable if any jet-skiers were to hit the wreck while submerged at high tide.
Please view large :)

Taken from the top of Brean Down, Somerset, looking in a sort of northerly direction at dusk. There aren't many trees up there, but they all look like this - battered and blown to face inland. The Down is protected by the National Trust and scheduled as a Site of Special Scientific Interest by the Nature Conservancy Council.

One of the buildings at the impressive Brean Down Fort, on the end of a rocky outcrop in the Severn Channel. In 1858, an invasion scare swept across the country. Gun batteries were built to defend against iron-clad French warships. Four spanned the Bristol Channel, of which this is one. It was ready for action in 1877, armed with 7 huge guns. The invasion never happened. After a suicidal gunner based at the fort caused a huge explosion it was deserted. It became a cafe, and then was re-garrisoned for the second World War, with two guns and two searchlight positions added. In 2002, the fort came under the protection of the National Trust.

Another shot from Brean Down Fort. The remote headland was an ideal outpost for the Admiralty's 'Department of Miscellaneous Weapons Development'. Several strange devices were tested here, including this one... a trolley was to carry the bomb down the track then, on impact with buffers at the far end, project it in to the air. But the trolley travelled so fast that it burst into flames, crashed through the buffers, and the took the whole lot over the cliff! The 'Expendable Noise-Maker' was also tested here, but landed in a nearby chicken run. Putting the whole war thing aside, it actually sounds quite a fun place to have worked!
