I have a little pocket Welsh dictionary, but the "Pevsners", covering the Buildings of Wales, include a useful ready-reference of the meanings of Welsh place-names. Among the meanings of the Aber... prefix, it says, is "confluence". Well, that makes sense because Abercynon is at the confluence of the Rivers Cynon and Taff, and that meeting of the waters is only yards upstream of this little bridge. This means that the little town is situated at the convergence of two valleys, and at the junction of the roads and railways that meander along them. At one time, then, a place of significance, now left to stew in its own juice as lorries moan past on the dual-carriageway A470 and "Pacers" hum by on half-hourly headways.
I've been feeling rather pleased with myself. I spotted an eBay auction of ten 120 rolls of expired Ilford Delta 400 for £29.99. Many eBay sellers offer expired film at prices higher than you'd pay for brand-new and seldom much less. Makes me laugh. This seller had photographed the cellophane-wrapped "brick", two rows of five, from directly above, so that it looked like one lot of five. I "messaged" him to make sure the auction was for ten rolls, as many sellers would ask that sort of price for five. The films expired in August 2017, so just barely out of date. Results seem indistinguishable from new film. £3 a roll. Happy camper.
