Su construcción fue decidida por la Asamblea Nacional en 1873, como un edificio religioso a perpetuidad en homenaje a la memoria de los numerosos ciudadanos franceses que habían perdido la vida durante la Guerra franco-prusiana. Según sus promotores se hacía también para expiar por la impiedad del Segundo Imperio francés. Fue el arquitecto Paul Abadie quien ganó el concurso para su construcción.

La primera piedra se colocó en 1875, y aunque se completó en 1914, no se consagró hasta el fin de la Primera Guerra Mundial, en 1919. La iglesia fue construida con fondos procedentes exclusivamente de una suscripción popular.

Es uno de los monumentos más visitados de la ciudad parisina.

Its construction was decided by the National Assembly in 1873, as a religious building in perpetuity in tribute to the memory of many French citizens who had lost their lives during the Franco-Prussian War. La construcción del palacio y los jardines tuvo lugar entre los años 1615 y 1617 cuando María de Médicis, cansada de la vida en el Louvre, decidió ordenar la construcción de un palacio a la italiana hecho a su medida.
Con el estallido de la Revolución Francesa el Palacio acabó convertido en una prisión, mientras que durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial fue utilizado como cuartel por los alemanes, que construyeron un bunker en el jardín.
Son los jardines más céntricos, populares y bellos de París.
