Bighorn sheep are Colorado's state mammal and one of my favorite animals to spot on my wanderings. We nearly lost them in the 1950s, but successful reintroduction efforts have led to a rebound in many areas around the state since the peak decline.
This is obviously a young sheep, but their horns can get absolutely huge and weigh up to 30 lbs!

This alpine riparian area along a small drainage off of Independence Pass in Lake County, CO had some outstanding golden color this past fall. In the distance you can see Star Mountain (12,941 ft / 3944 m) on right and La Plata Peak (14,361 ft / 4372 m) at center.
