hellebore is a poisonous flowering plant that can bloom in winter snow. it's also known by the names "christmas rose" and "lenten rose."
on the title of "christmas rose" -- there's a christian legend that a small girl on the way to visit newborn baby jesus wept because she had no gift to give him. an angel saw her crying, and made these flowers bloom from beneath the snow where her tears had fallen. she then picked the flowers and gave them to baby jesus.
the name "lenten rose" derives from the fact that these winter-hardy flowers are still in bloom during the late winter days of lent.
the name "hellebore" derives from a combination of the greek words for "to injure" and "food."
fun fact: the ancient greeks used hellebores as biological warfare, once poisioning an enemy city's water supply.
