These are the same Sandhill colts (chicks) I posted where one seemed to get in trouble for playing in the mud. This was taken later in the day after a bath. Once the mud was washed off, its sister allowed it to touch her again :)

I think I was more surprised to see it than it was to see me. I knew there was a nest in the tree because it's mom sat in the opening day after day and dad sat in the other tree. But I did not know if there were eggs or chicks, until I saw this tiny head pop up.

The reason I know this nest so well is that I took this photo from my front porch. Even though the tree is less than 10 feet away, the owls were unconcerned with people coming and going to my front door or sitting on the porch. I'd carry groceries walking back and forth and they'd sit there and watch me. Sometimes I'd watch them back. Of course I had my camera in hand.

This is not just a first peek of the world for the the young owl, but also a first peek on Flickr of the photos I took.

Herons usually take snakes they catch into the weeds to struggle with them, but this Great Blue Heron did the opposite and brought its catch into the open water. He fought with this snake for quite a while, keeping his back to me most of the time so I would not steal his meal 😛

Taken the same day as my last post. They seemed very happy to greet each other. This went on for a minute or two. The female was already on the rocks with her ducklings when the drake arrived. He greeted the ducklings too, although not as enthusiastically. I suppose it could have been a adult child returning to visit its mother, I've seen juvenile, almost adult males do that. But I'd guess it was her mate. In any case, they definitely shared some affection. I felt double lucky to see it. It's my favorite thing to photograph. I know people who refuse to believe birds feel emotions, even though its plain as day that they do. And I just love to see them show it.

I've tried for years to get the right opportunity to photograph a male Wood Duck standing with his crest up, never had any luck. I've looked all over the state and never had much luck finding Wood Ducks at all. Then one day close to home, this guy, along with his wife and kids posed for me for a full hour. I went a little crazy and took a lifetime supply of photos in case I never got another chance. Problem now is that I might never find enough time to sort them all.
