The eastern American toad (Anaxyrus americanus) is widely distributed throughout east North America and its diet consists of small invertebrates such as earthworms, spiders, slugs, centipedes, moths, ants and flies.
The photo shows an American toad residing under a mushroom (Megacollybia murina) that is covered in small flies (fungus gnats). Evidently the toad was not posing for a photo, but may have taken up residence under the mushroom in search of food - the fungus gnats?
