April Fifth of 2008, it was the perfect spring day in Central Park. The sun was shining and one turtle was so determined to enjoy a sunbath that nothing could interrupt the session.
As I was lying on a rock at The Pond, composing one close up after another, I cold not help but say to my friend “New York even has an effect on the wildlife.” Most turtles understand the only proper response to a human trying to get up close and personal is “I’m out of here dude” but this little fella seemed to be enjoying the Plaza Hotel backdrop and two people singing “If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere.”
As a matter of fact the shooting session became a bit of a spectacle. People began asking us questions. One person assumed I was a pro and the turtle was a prop. When she asked “Is that a real turtle” the turtle looked over to see who could ask such a question and the crowd responded with cheers.
As people with cameras began lining up like paparazzi waiting their turn at the step and repeat, I could have sworn that I saw the smile on this turtle’s face widen a bit.

High above the parade grounds of Van Cortlandt Park is this out-of-the-way rocky outcrop that offers a view of Manhattan.
The road on the right is Broadway and around two hundred blocks north of where that street is called “The Great White Way.” Not very easy to find but the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings, they are in this photo somewhere.
