Fearless in the face of extreme danger, Steve employs the "Courson Stare" to show this Pygmy Killer Heron that he is not intimidated by this attack. As neither the attacker nor the attackee were willing to back down, this standoff went on for hours (as the birds above rained down hoark and goark). As I have not see Steve in weeks, he may still be there....

I spend a lot of time photographing with my friend Steve Courson. On this particular day, we were documenting a nesting colony of Great Blue Herons. When visiting this particular nesting site, we wear camoflaged clothing so as not to disturb the birds. Camo works - the birds seem rather oblivious to our presence (yes, there are two photographers in this picture). Since camo umbrellas are not available, we are careful when looking up!@!

So, the question is: why did I post this pic? Quite frankly, I knew it would peave a lot of birders and tree huggers. Personally, I have been active in nature photography for 40 years (yeah that’s right, since I was two years old…) No one can question my love of photography, or my love of my nature subjects. Bottom line, I feed my friends, they reciprocate with trust and friendship, and let me take a pic or two (no friggin model release required either). Don’t agree? Keep it to yourself. Don’t like it, go pound salt. I will continue to feed. Got to run now, got a load of bird seed coming…

Oh, and many thanks to my friend Tim King for having the cajone's to take this image. www.flickr.com/photos/14108432@N08/

Every once in a while you run across a really bad driver. This is one such incidence. This dumb blonde thought she was sooo good, she even drives with her eyes closed - no hands on the wheel.

I have often been asked whether I wear camo gear when photographing. Since I have already pointed out that I do 90% of my shooting from my Dodge (with the Hemi), I have little need for it.

Having said that, I do admit to wearing camo, not that I believe birds are stupid enough to think I am a bush, but primarily because my gear is friggin warm (good for -50), sheds water, breathes, and is boyant (for those times that I am stupid enough to venture out onto thin ice). If one can withstand the behind the back snickering, and the "you're a pussy" comments, I recommend the use of camo for the above mentioned reasons.

One drawback of camo: you are likely to get your ass shot off if you are in the bush during hunting season.
