I find amazing the intelligence and technique displayed by birds in their quest for food. This Heron was busy hunting in a duck-weed covered stream, in the middle of a rain storm to boot. Talk about having trouble seeing your prey! If you watch closely, you will notice that he dips his beak in the water, and moves it to simulate an insect. Also amazing is the fact that he moves his beak position with the flow of the stream. Over the period of the 4 hours that I spent shooting him, his technique netted him (guess I should say beaked, not netted) 4 fish.
BTW, this is one of the perches that I place in ponds and streams each spring.
