After releasing Show and DVD on Universal South, Moorer moved to independent label Sugar Hill Records. With a slightly rougher edge than past efforts, The Duel was released in April 2004.

About a year after The Duel, Moorer divorced Primm and married Steve Earle, after serving as his opening act on a European tour.

Earle produced her 2006 album, Getting Somewhere. Moorer wrote all the songs by herself, with the exception of one co-write with Earle. The final track of "Getting Somewhere" revisits her parents' murder-suicide. The couple live in New York City.

Earle has been married seven times, including twice to the same woman. His wives were Sandra (Sandy) Henderson, Cynthia Dunn, Carol Hunter (with whom he had his first child, Justin), Lou-Anne Gill (with whom he had a second son, Ian), Maria Teresa Ensenat, Lou-Anne Gill a second time, and finally, in 2005, singer-songwriter Allison Moorer. He also has a daughter. His first son, Justin Townes Earle, was named for Townes Van Zandt.
