City Hall Zaanstad, Zaandam
The new City Hall of Zaanstad is linked to the new bridge over the railway and the motorway. The short side where the main entrance and public functions are located, is situated on the square on this bridge. The long side of the town hall with offices is lifted between the railway and the main road, above the bus station. The town hall is designed as a series of several major Zaanse houses, where the characteristics of the local architecture are applied in a new way. Typical for Zaanse wooden houses is the characteristic facade architecture: the wooden walls are very flat and painted in various shades of green, while the architectural image is made strong by the use of white lists, windows and curls. Also the new city hall facade architecture in green and white. Another feature of Zaanse houses is their eclecticism, from all styles and periods elements are acquired. This is also done here as the Zaanse houses and their facades are often interpretations of world famous architecture from Italy and France. In the walls of City Hall internationally renowned architects such as Rossi, Venturi, Piano, Pei and Natalini paraphrased. In the town hall also typical Zaanse symbols are processed: on the short side, the chamber, which is located above the main entrance, ten different dormers, decorated with the arms of the municipalities that have been merged into Zaanstad. On the wedding hall on either side of the gutter hang two wedding rings in the roof ornament at the tip of the facade, the rings are united. The balcony where newlyweds can appear has a balustrade of two kissing whales swam away from the Zaanse city arms. Soeters Van Eldonk architects designed the complex.
