Ο ναός του Αρχιμανδρειού, αφιερωμένος στην Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου υπήρξε το καθολικό της μονής Αρχιμανδρείου ή Αρχιμανδρίτου ή Κυράς Χιμαντριώτισσας. Το όνομά της πρέπει πιθανόν να συνδεθεί με το προβάδισμα που είχε μεταξύ των άλλων μονών των Ιωαννίνων, καθώς σε αυτήν διέμενε ο αρχιμανδρίτης ηγούμενος.
Κατά άλλη εκδοχή το όνομα Αρχιμανδρειό προέρχεται από το όνομα του ιδρυτή της. Η μονή αναφέρεται για πρώτη φορά στις πηγές το 1383, με αφορμή τη μετάβαση του ηγουμένου της Γαβριήλ στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, όπου συναντήθηκε με τον αυτοκράτορα Μανουήλ Β’ Παλαιολόγο. Μετά την επιστροφή του ο Γαβριήλ έγινε μητροπολίτης Ιωαννίνων.
Από τα τέλη του 15ου αιώνα στο Αρχιμανδρειό είναι γυναικεία μονή, οι μοναχές της οποίας, φημίζονταν για τις επιδόσεις τους στην υφαντική και την κατεργασία μεταξωτών και λινών υφασμάτων. Στη σημερινή του μορφή ο ναός είναι μια μεγάλων διαστάσεων τρίκλιτη θολωτή βασιλική, με τρεις αψίδες ανατολικά και νάρθηκα στα δυτικά.
The church of the Archimandrite, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, was the katholikon of the monastery of the Archimandriο or Lady Chimantriotissa.
Its name should probably be connected with the lead it had among the other monasteries of Ioannina, as the archimandrite abbot lived in it.According to another version, the name Archimandrite comes from the name of its founder.
The monastery is first mentioned in the sources in 1383, on the occasion of the passage of the abbot Gabriel to Constantinople, where he met with the emperor Manuel II Palaiologos. After his return, Gabriel became the metropolitan of Ioannina.
From the end of the 15th century in Archimandreio it is a nunnery, the nuns of which were famous for their performance in the weaving and processing of silk and linen fabrics. In its current form, the church is a large three-aisled vaulted basilica, with three arches on the east and a narthex on the west.
