Kastaniani is built at an altitude of 880 meters on the western slopes of Mount Giftisa (1750 meters) and is 28.7 kilometers from Konitsa. One of the main characteristics of the village is the bridges connecting the villages, the fountains and the seventeen churches and chapels that form a protective circle around the settlement, with the parish church of Agios Nikolaos being the centerpiece. Kastaniani is renowned for the exceptional stone craftsmen, whose works are found both inside the settlement and in the wider region. The visitor of the village meets four stone bridges, wooden houses, stone-built houses with wooden balconies and sachnisis, front doors and windows with one-piece prefabricated and well-dressed ankornas, masonry abnormal and isodomous fireplaces with marvelous stone reliefs, cobbled streets and stone walls. Kastaniani is surrounded by dense forest, while the streams inside the settlement meet an abundance of plane trees, walnuts and chestnuts, which are said to be due to its name.
