The Netherlands-Velsen-Zuid
Velsen-Zuid is a (split) village, situated on the banks of the North Sea Canal, close to IJmuiden and Haarlem. After the digging of the North Sea Canal (1876) Velsen became two settlements, on both sides of the canal. The old pictoresque centre of Velsen developed around the oldest or one of the oldest church sites of Western Netherlands, probably starting with the founding of a 8th century wooden church by the missionary Engelmundus, a close associate of the better known Willibrord. The wooden church was followed-up by a tuff stone one. Both churches were destroyed, restored and renovated several times. Untill now, however, no convincing traces of construction of the old wooden church are found under the present church. During archaeological research of (the content of) a now lost, 13th century built-on chapel, a once colorful gravestone was found, with the remains of two of the highest Holland nobles underneath: Willem van Brederode and his wife Hillegonda van Voorne. Combined facial and body reconstructions are shown in Huis van Hilde (Hilde's House), the archaeology information centre and repository of the Dutch province North Holland, which was opened in Castricum in 2015. Image made with kite and camera (attached to the kite's line). © Tom Kisjes
