The Netherlands-Heemskerk
View on (in fact) a castle like manor, with walls too thin to be a genuine, defensible castle. Originally castle Assumburg dates from the 13th century and was rebuild in the 16th century. The square towers are the oldest parts.
Former home of the noble families of Van Velsen and Van Assendelft. Restored in the 20th century and nowadays in use as a Stayokay hostel.
The castles' garden was renovated about 10 years ago and is managed by the volunteers of Assumburg Castle Garden Foundation.

The Netherlands Heemskerk.
View on Fort Veldhuis, one of the 42 forts of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. The former circular permanent defence construction around the capital of The Netherlands. Like a hermetically sealed circle, this would be the last resistance in the defence of the country. The Defence Line was prepared for a siege of about six months. The fort was built in 1893 and is located near Heemskerk. Nowadays it houses the Aircraft Recovery Group 1940- 1945, a voluntary operated foundation and since decades investigating all matters concerning the airwar over Holland during the second worldwar.

The Netherlands - Heemskerk
A lichen is a composite organism that emerges from algae or cyanobacteria living among the filaments of a fungus in a mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship. In woodland, lichen species often stand out in wintertime and early spring, when the sunlight is not blocked by the leafless trees and plants The photographed species is very tolerant of pollution and has a cosmopolitan distribution, making it one of the most common lichens. In my country (The Netherlands), with a huge deposition of nitrogen, thus very common. This specimen was seen in a forested area of the North-Holland Dune Reserve, near Heemskerk. © Tom Kisjes

The Netherlands - Heemskerk
View on Noorderveld, at the edge of the Heemskerk urban area. More than two thousand years ago this polder land belonged to the estuary of the Oer-IJ, a northern tributary of the river Rhine. A little further, near nowadays Castricum, the Oer-IJ discharged into the North Sea. Noorderveld now functions as a (recently re-landscaped) water storage area with a high natural value. Lots of meadowbirds still breed here. Photographed in morning light with kite and camera (attached to the kite's line). © Tom Kisjes
