The Netherlands, near Beverwijk.
When the North Sea Canal was built (1876) by digging a channel through the old IJ Bay, it was lined with dikes, after which the remaining portions of the IJ Bay were reclaimed and turned into polders. These images are made in the Wijkermeerpolder, one of the reclaimed polders. So, a 150 years ago, a salt water lake, directly connected with the "Zuiderzee", was located here.

The Netherlands - Beverwijk
In fortification, a lunette was originally an outwork of half-moon shape. This lunet in Beverwijk (anno 1800) was part of a line of defense, built from Beverwijk to Wijk aan Zee, to protect Holland (on its narrowest point) against enemy attack from northern North-Holland. Originally the series counted about 30 lunets; 7 of them are (more or less) preserved. Image made with kite and camera (attached to the kite's line). © Tom Kisjes

The Netherlands, near Beverwijk.
Lost and found! Or perhaps a science project?

The Netherlands-Beverwijk
The sinuous St. Aagtendyke is a 13th Century embankment that protected the village Beverwijk and its surrounding territory for ages against the salt water of the former, since 1860 reclaimed lake Wijker (on the left side of the dyke). The dyke was named after the holy Saint Agatha of Sicily, who appears to have saved a local virgin, fleeing from the Northmen Rorik. The original names of Beverwijk were St Aghetendorpe and St Aagtenkerke, also derived from this saint. Image made with kite and camera (attached to the kite's line). © Tom Kisjes
