Nowadays Ruigoord is inhabited by artists and "masters in the art of living", situated in the Amsterdam western harbour area. But Ruigoord ('t Ruyghe Oort) used to be an island, untill the digging of the North Sea Canal (1865-1876). It took a lot of protest, resistance, procedures and willpower to prevent the total demolition of this artistic free state.

Netherlands, Amsterdam harbour area.
AEB Amsterdam (background) is a waste to energy company, owned by the City of Amsterdam. A nesting box for the peregrine falcon is attached to one of the chimneys.
At the front the Amsterdam depot of EMR (European Metal Recycling).
During this photo session with kite and camera a fox with a rabbit in his snout calmly passed me and entered this scrap metal depot, probably to enjoy his or her dinner. © Tom Kisjes
