The Netherlands - Zaanse Schans
View on the well preserved mills of "The Zaanse Schans" along river Zaan, with oil mill "De Bonte Hen" (The Spotted Hen-1693) at the front.
According to historian Boorsma (1950) a total of 204 oil mills once were active in the Zaan region.

A session with kite and camera on a low level meadowland, covered and raised with dried mud from surrounding ditches. The mud was just strong enough to carry my weight.
With pioneer species, like cursed buttercup (blaartrekkende boterbloem-Ranunculus scleratus) and purple loosestrife (grote kattenstaart-Lythrum salicaria); hardy species which are among the first to colonize this disrupted ecosystem. From above it looks a bit like the "craquelé" of porcelain.
