Early morning view on the main drinking water plant in our province (North Holland), where -on a yearly basis- 70 million m3 surface water from lake IJssel is extracted and purified for 1,7 million inhabitants.
The drinking water company (PWN) transports two thirds of the extracted water to the dune area for further, natural purification. Thats why PWN also manages 7.300 hectares of nature reserve. The last couple of years a high concentration level of chloride (salt) in lake IJssels' water during hot and dry summers became a main concern.
