The Netherlands-Limmen
View on the "Schulpvaart", a natural ditch and relic from the time (3.000 BC) that the "Oer-IJ" estuary was situated here. Later on -untill the 20th century- the "Schulpvaart" was an important waterway for the carrying trade between the villages Castricum, Limmen and Akersloot. Lots of shells (schulp/schelp in Dutch) were transported to the lime kilns near lake Alkmaar.
