The site of Thermon (Thermos/Θέρμος) has a long history as a central place in the Greek region of Aetolia (today Aitoloakarnania). It was the site of a Bronze Age (16th-11th c. BCE) and Early Iron Age (11th-9th/8th c. BCE) settlement, and, from the 8th c. onward, the seat of the cult of Apollo Thermios. It served as the federal sanctuary of the Aetolian League from the 4th through 2nd c. BCE.
