Kite Aerial Photography at Burning Man 2015

This image was taken by a camera lofted by a kite.

The winds during my one outing at Burning Man in 2015 were by far the worst I've ever flown in. When I first lifted my kite, it wouldn't stay in the air, it kept drifting towards the ground, so I brought it in, tuned it to catch more wind, and brought it back into the air. After that, the winds picked up, and stayed steadily strong, until a series of dust storms hit me, each stronger than the last. I was very scared my brand new kite was going to break and float off to Utah. At the height of each of the gusty dust storms, I had both my hands on my kite string reel, and was walking with the wind, and was still extremely nervous I was going to lose the entire kite and KAP rig. The high wind damaged the kite a bit, the cross-spar strings have eaten through a decent section of the nylon where they attach to the kite. Yikes!

The photos that came out of the shoot were worth it though. The Burning Man org severely limited the number of drones on-playa this year, so only with my kite did I have the freedom to do the low altitude aerial photography that I wanted to.

This image is of the man itself, during the midst of some of those dust storms.

Technical Details:
6' Rok Kite
Canon S90, using CHDK
Brooxes Simplex Rig

This image is of a few people who had climbed to the top of a piece of art that had a skull on the very top. Burning Man asks wants photographers to ask permission to photograph people before you do, which was a bit tough in this situation, I had to yell up to them to ask if it was okay. They all said yes, and two of them came running down as I was moving on asking to get copies of the photos, which I was happy to provide after the burn. :)
