Every year since coming on Flickr I have done a birthday portrait series. Today is my 68th birthday. The straight out of camera shot is in the comments. As always, the portrait is edited and retouched.
This has been an extremely hard year. I lost most of my furniture and belongings after last year's Hurricane Ian flooded my home. I had already been going through a myriad of health issues, and this year has brought even more. I have a heart valve problem which may require open heart surgery in the future. I'm hoping it stays at bay until I can collect full retirement benefits in another two years, in case I am unable to work. Another ticking time bomb is coming from nerve damage in my leg from spinal stenosis brought on by 2 herniated disks. If that requires surgery, I may be out of commission for a year. Without surgery I run the risk of the nerve slowly dying off and being unable to walk. As it is, I'm already using a cane and have had numerous falls from balance issues. I just don't have the energy or time to do many of the things I love, like coming on Flickr and posting pics, and keeping up with everyone's pics. I'm just too tired after working all day. Nevertheless, I try to post now and then.

Snowy Egrets are beautiful birds with their brilliant white, fluffy plumage and bright yellow feet and facial markings. This one had its mouth open the whole time I was near it, and I wondered if there was something wrong with it that made it unable to close its beak. Egrets hunt by stabbing their prey, so that could be disastrous for this bird. Hopefully it was just reacting to me and showing a bit of alarm over my presence.
