Often bypassed for the magnificent Wells Cathedral by tourists, the Church of St Cuthbert is nevertheless a beautiful church in its own right.
Though the dedication to Cuthbert suggests a Saxon origin, the present building is the result of two major building campaigns, one each in the 13th and 15th centuries. The basic ground plan of aisled nave, chancel and transepts date from the 13th century, but the building was heightened in the 15th century in the Perpendicular style, both inside with its superb carved roof, and outside, with its massive western tower, which rises to 151 feet (46 metres).

Glastonbury is dominated by its ancient tor, well known throughout the world for its associations with the Arthurian legend. However, the Tor has a rival: the Church of St John the Baptist. St John's is one of the most ambitious parish churches in Somerset but its glory is the superb west tower.
Rising some 134.5 feet (41 metres) above the ground, the tower, built in the late 15th century when the church's original central tower collapsed, is one of the tallest and most impressive parish church towers in a county known for its rich steeples.

The exquisite great choir fan vault; the earliest major example in Britain. Described by Simon Jenkins as "finer than any work of the Italian Renaissance". Redecorated by the Victorians in the 19th century to a medieval design, it is one of the finest works of stone in any religious building in the world.

Arguably the most stunning part of a stunning building, the Great Choir is the most decorative part of the abbey. It was constructed mostly between 1415 and 1437, then damaged by fire, and has the distinction of being the earliest of the 'great' fan vaults in Britain.
