A great blue heron standing behind some tall reeds took off and surprised me as I walked along the trail at the edge of a large pond this morning. Then a strange sound came from a nearby bird as the heron flew away. I looked up in a tree I was next to and saw this osprey perched in its branches. I've seen many osprey on the shores of Union Bay over the years, but never this close.

I had a long lens and my tripod with me and set it up for a couple of photographs. After observing the osprey for 5-10 minutes, I packed up and continued on. About 30 minutes later, I circled back around and the large bird was still in the same tree looking over the pond.

This morning was cold – it almost felt like a winter morning. A hard shower fell as I drove up here. But I'm glad I continued on to take my short hike. It's rare you can get this close to one of these birds. Even rarer twice in one day.
