Longs Peak March 2007 - Somehow it doesn't seem fair to do a hard climb in early December and not be able to claim a winter ascent. Well, since that's the way it is, we'll take a credit for a winter ascent on a stellar early March day. It was warm and not windy. The trail was covered with packed snow that made for comfortable walking. The roped pitch had enough snow to get great crampon purchase. Oh, it was so easy it's like we were cheating.
Still Longs is a long day: close to 5000 ft of elevation gain and 15 miles of walking. I badgered Tom into doing this climb since he's leaving for Annapurna IV soon and needs to get some long training days in. Gabi only heard about the trip at 5 the evening before. She was very excited to summit Longs on her first winter attempt.
For some reason I felt great and energetic all day. What's the secret? GU2O in the water? Being well-hydrated? I didn't eat a lot, but I tried to eat all day. I gloated a bit watching Tom struggle. He's the one who needs to train after all. I'll be cragging around Eldo while he's schlepping gear up a Himalayan massif.

This was our first view of the route. I was amazed to see so little snow on the route. One of my big concerns was avalanche danger, but from here it looked like avalanche danger probably wouldn't be a problem. We were making reasonable time, and it wasn't windy. I got really excited about the climb and started walking more quickly.
