Most buildings in Thailand and even some fields have spirit houses prominently displayed out front. The idea is that the spirits that used to occupy the land will live in the spirit house rather than haunt the main house. So the spirit house has to be nicer than the main house. This house must be fancy since its spirit house is rather elaborate.

Sukhothai, Kampheang Phet, and Si Satchanalai all have ruins from when Sukhothai was Thailand's capital ~700 years ago. Julie and I visited Sukhothai in 1994 and visited the other two during this trip. We really enjoyed our quiet day biking and walking around the Kampheang Phet Historical Park.
