New Years 2005-06 in Aspen - Julie and I bought Classic Passes (4 days of skiing at the Aspen resorts) again this year so we decided to spend New Years with Megan in Aspen. Kevin drove out from southern California, and Jason and Heidi came in from Carbondale for New Years Eve.On the last day of 2005 Kevin skinned up the mountain, and we met up with him at 9 at the Sundeck. We met up with Jason an hour later at the same place. It was a fun day of skiing and a fun evening at Megan's place. We ventured out for an hour or so to watch the fireworks over the mountain.Luckily we got to sleep reasonably early since the following day turned out to be an epic ski day. If much snow was forecasted, we missed the forecast and even that morning were quite surprised to see 6-10 inches of fresh snow under the lift at Snowmass. We made fresh tracks on Sam's Knob before two laps of fresh tracks on Powerline Glades. More fresh tracks on Sheer Bliss on the way to Alpine Springs. We were drooling at all the untracked powder under the High Alpine lift, but just 5 minutes before we arrived at the top, the ski patrol had opened Hanging Valley Wall. We had heard their blasting earlier, but given the white-out conditions at times, I had figured that they wouldn't open it today.Well, we had no choice. We took off our skis and hiked the short distance to Roberto's. The drop was in decent shape, and we made our way through the white-out in what Megan thought was the direction of the Wall. In the end all we know is we found plenty of steep and deep untracked powder. At times the lack of visibility made for surprising turns. Maybe we skied the wall, maybe we didn't. If we didn't, Megan doesn't even know to which side of it we were on which is quite surprisingly given how big it is.Up the Elk Camp chair we opted for another short hike and skied Longshot. After about 15 minutes of making fresh tracks through moderately-spaced trees, Julie stopped and enthused, That must be some of the best skiing ever! 3 lifts took us to the top of the Burn again. We skied Powderhorn 3600' vertical to the Campground lift. 3 lifts again to the top of the Burn, and a last blast through the Powerline Glades. 24500' vertical total for the day. Lift-served, of course, but still a good tele day.Kevin and I got up early the following day and skinned up Aspen Mountain. By 12:30 our legs were screaming No more. I felt bad ending a perfectly good ski day so early, but Kevin pointed out that we did start skiing at 7.
