Arapahos by bike - Continuing my bike-from-Boulder-and-climb-a-high-peak series, I convinced Karl to join me for a jaunt up South and North Arapaho last week. The Arapahos are prominent from Boulder, and North Arapaho at about 13500' is the highest peak in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. It ended up being an 11.5 hour effort including a 0.5 hour lunch stop in Ned on the return.
We left Boulder about 5:30am, stopped in Ned and bought some donuts which actually made my stomach feel better. At the 4th of July trailhead which is about 5 miles past the end of the pavement on a fairly rough 2WD road, we scarfed down the dinner leftovers that I brought from the night before. I felt quite good after that.
The normal way to summit North Arapaho is to summit South Arapaho and do the high traverse between the two peaks. We did this and then reversed the route so we spent quite a bit of time above 13000'. Karl had a throbbing headache. Mine wasn't as bad. There are a couple spots on the traverse where it's imprudent to slip. We succeeded. I've also done this traverse in the spring.
The $5 lunch deal of two pieces of pizza and unlimited fountain Gatorade felt like the best money we ever spent. Aaah.
In addition to the Arapahos I think I've now done (by bike from Boulder):

Storm Peak
Meeker
Apache
Audubon
Evans
Shoshoni
