Milk stout for breakfast. We're champions.

White Rim April 2006 - Another great trip on the White Rim.
Topher, A.J., Jen, and I drove out Thursday after work. We probably didn't get out of Boulder 'til after 6PM and rolled into camp around 12:30AM.
Day 1. I convinced Mike to ride the Jug Handle loop with me. Additionally I volunteered to drive the shuttle vehicle the first leg from the visitor's center to the bottom of the Shafer Trail. Mike pedalled down there, and we started the loop with a climb back up the Shafer Trail. We passed the rest of our group on the flat bench just below the Island in the Sky mesa top. Mike and I turned right at the highway, headed south, turned east at the Dead Horse Point road and when that turned south, we got back onto dirt and continued east into Long Canyon. The 2000' descent down Long Canyon was fantastic. We took a number of photos since neither of us had been there before.
It was a long, hot climb up Potash. We passed Lisa and Paul toward the bottom heading into Moab in Jonathon's truck to get some stitches in Lisa's arm. We should have asked them for water since we bummed water from a friendly family less than an hour later. A good, full day of riding. Mike was dragging on the hills.
Day 2. It didn't take much to convince Mark to do an 8-mile detour down Lathrop Canyon. It's steep at the top and sandy toward the river. Except for the last mile before the river it's rideable in most spots without too much effort. Another beautiful canyon I had never been in before.
We caught up with Topher at Airport, and the 3 of us enjoyed lunch under the shade of the juniper tree at Gooseberry. It was ~4PM by the time we left Gooseberry, and we had barely started our ride. Topher and I skipped White Crack, but Mark had never been there before so he had to stop. He pushed his bike up Murphy and into camp not long before dark.
Day 3. No special excursions. I tried climbing the south side of the hogback again in the morning since I didn't make it the night before, but I didn't make it the following morning either. I rode with Jonathon and Birgit for a bit. Topher, Dave, A.J., Jen, and I put together dinner at Taylor. The curry concoction seemed to go over, and we didn't have any leftovers. We had another fun evening of singing even though Bridget didn't get her guitar out as she had the two previous evenings.
Day 4. A quick ride up to the top of the Mineral Bottom switchbacks. I pedalled with Bridget. Some folks had set up a car shuttle. A.J. and I opted to continue pedalling and got almost to the park boundary (on the paved road) when Jen and Topher came in the truck. Most of the group rendezvoused at the campground out on the Moab-I-70 road where we could shower, drink the last of the wine, and say good-bye.
'Til next time...
