Mt. Lady Washington and Storm Peak February 2006 - Last Sunday Jack and I had plans to climb Longs. On Thursday the forecast for Sunday was good; on Friday a little worse; by Saturday it sounded like a cold and windy day above treeline in RMNP. We decided to sleep in, leave the climbing gear at home, and walk up Mt. Lady Washington instead.
The weather ended up being stellar, as is fairly obvious from the photos. We were really bummed to be so close to the north face of Longs on such a beautiful day and not have the gear or the time to make the ascent.
As a consolation prize we summited Storm Peak as well. The snow ascent was fun, and the snow was surprisingly well-consolidated for February. In fact on the way down we got into a situation where the snow was almost ice-hard. We couldn't kick steps and felt very sketchy and exposed with no crampons and no axes.
I haven't climbed many 13ers in the winter, but these are two that I had done before. For Jack it was his first ascent of Storm Peak.
