"Get yourself in the midst of an encounter: shoot a picture with people, rather than of people." - Tiffany Jones
-------------------------
I get a completely different reaction from strangers when I'm dressed casually versus being dressed formally in a suit for work. Today, since I was out sick, I happened to be dressed rather casually (corduroys and a sweater, mind you, not Sean John's and Timberlands), and I wandered into a bookstore (location withheld because I'm a classy cat) while out grabbing lunch. The expression you see on this guys' face? That's the look he gave me the whole time I was there, from the minute he looked up from his own book to greet me.
I wound up choosing the two books on the counter, Gordon Parks' Half Past Autumn and a Japanese dictionary. I used my debit card to pay. Now, a customer before me had just used her debit card, and his machine worked fine. But when it was my turn, he had to "make a call first."
That's when I shot him. With my camera. :)

I've been coming here for almost 15 years, so I can testify. It's not just the music - name any legitimate jazz legend, and he's played here, at the world's oldest active club. It's not just about the food - fried chicken or catfish, mac & cheese, greens, yams, cornbread, and a Long Island Iced Tea that will make you holla... It's the space, reminiscent of a Harlem juke joint. It's the people (the seasoned Detroiter will spot Tyree Guyton of Heidelberg Project fame, and the artist behind "the shoes" from one of my Time Traveler images, somewhere in this photo). It's the energy. The improv. The vibe. You cannot come to Detroit, and not experience the unmistakeable rhythm of a legend, at Baker's Keyboard Lounge. Now you know.
