Conception Bay South, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada

Yesterday morning I headed out in hopes of photographing a Yellow Warbler in a maple tree along a stream not far from my home. It was a calm clear morning and as the first rays of light filtered thru a distant Spruce I lined up this shot to include some golden bokeh balls.

1/25s hand holding my 500mm F4 lens 20mins before sunrise...If there is one thing photography has taught me over the years is to follow my own path, enjoy the learning process by breaking all the rules and create what I love...This Double-crested Cormorant was the ideal subject for this slow shutter speed as he stood perfectly still in the light.

A Purple Sandpiper takes a quick break from feeding as a huge wave crashes over the rocks behind it.

For me this is probably the most excited I’ve been about an image in a while. This winter I have made a number of trips out in hopes of photographing Purple Sandpipers but each time I failed to find them. My luck changed this past weekend when I finally caught up with a flock of about ten. I enjoyed watching the group as they dodged the waves in search of food while I waited for the sun to rise. As hints of light started to illuminate the rocks I noticed one particular spot that was catching the first rays. As the group jumped to avoid the waves below some individuals would land in the light before returning below to continue feeding. I waited patient and finally nailed this composition which is basically straight out of camera making it even more special.
