25.04.2024 - On the patch . This arrived during a Rain storm this morning and cleared off North soon as the Sun arrived . Not a regular on this patch and not even an annual sight , so always nice to get a really early one . Strange to that this will have travelled from Central Africa just to Mate , leave their eggs with other birds to hatch and look after then by Mid June the adults will start to head off South again to Africa .

I have seen Orange-crowned Warblers on many occasions and I have yet to see any trace of orange in the crown. Wikipedia says "the orange patch on the crown is not usually visible. Despite its name they are rather dull, featureless warblers. This is reflected in the scientific name Leiothlypis celata. The genus comes from leios meaning plain, and thlupis, an unknown bird mentioned by Aristotle. Celatus means hidden and this is probably the resident Californian subspecies sordida, which means shabby. They breed right across Canada and Alaska and also throughout the western United States and I photographed this one in San Diego. Most Orange-crowned Warblers are migratory and winter in Central America and Mexico.
