The bright flap of skin under the Brown Anole's chin, called a dewlap, is used to frighten/warn off predators and also for mating displays.
As I photographed these lizards, whenever I would get too close for their comfort, they would either run away, or stand their ground and flash their brilliant flaps of skin in hopes that I would be the one to run away :)
