Little is recorded of the castle's history. Some historians claim that the present castle, which dates from 16th century, stands on the ruin of a much older fortress.
History of Sligo states that Moygara Castle was built circa 1285 by the O'Garas. In 1538 the castle was captured by Manus O'Donnell. The castle was recaptured in 1581 by troops under Malby of Connaught and repaired. There have been various owners of the castle over the next few hundred years.
There is a preservation order on the castle which preclaims it must be kept as a ruin.
