A small butterfly which is quite rare and there appears to be little known about it apart from the fact that it is found in Assam, Burma, northern Thailand, and southern China. The wingspan is probably between 20 and 25mm.

Species : Heliophorus epicles latilimbata
Distributed widely from Nepal, through India, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, peninsular Malaysia, parts of Indonesia, Laos, Vietnam, and southern China. It is a small butterfly with a wingspan of 22-27mm. The common name of this butterfly comes from the iridescent purple patches on the upper wings of the male which are not present on the female pictured here. The underwings are very different, being predominantly yellow and red, and can be seen in the example in the first comment box below.
Habitat is sunlit clearings in dense forest and also disturbed forest edges and scrub up to around 1500m asl. Males are very territorial and defend their territory vigorously. The species is multivoltine and flies all year round. The lifecycle of this species is not fully known but the larval foodplants are members of the Polygonaceae family. In India this is Rumex hastatus and in Thailand is Polygonum chinense (Chinese Knotweed).
