Chiang Dao NS, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Order : Lepidoptera
Family : Riodininae
Sub-Family : Nemeobiinae
Genus : Abisara
Species : Abisara abnormis

This is a rare species that is only found in a few locations in Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and southern China. It is a small-medium size butterfly with a wingspan of 40-48mm. There is little difference between the sexes but the female is slightly paler in colour than the male. Habitat is sheltered forest locations with plenty of shade where they 'hop' from one plant to another in a short bouncy flight. Like other Riodininae species, when it lands on vegetation it usually has its wings half open at 45 degrees, making it difficult to take a decent photograph of the upper wings. When mud puddling it closes its wings like most other species.
The larval foodplants are believed to be Maesa sp. (Primulaceae) , a genus of vines, shrubs, and trees up to 12m tall. Unfortunately I know of no research into the lifecycle of this little beauty and therefore have no further information on this.

All my insect pics are single, handheld shots of live insects in wild situations.

Family : Arctiidae
Sub-Family : Arctiinae
Species : Amata grotei

As with the Amata species that I posted 2 weeks ago I have not been able to find out very much about this clearwing moth. I'm not even sure about its distribution although it is probably to be found across south and southeast Asia as with the previous species. It is a daytime flyer and probably not very common. Wingspan is again an estimation at 30-35 mm. The common name usually used for the Arctiidae is Tiger Moths but Amata ssp. are more commonly known as Wasp or Grass Moths.

All my insect pics are single, handheld shots of live insects.

Sub-Family : Arctiinae
Species : Amata sperbius

Unfortunately I have not been able to find out very much about this moth other than the fact that it appears to be distributed across south and southeast Asia and flies during the daytime. It is not uncommon and has a wingspan of 30-35 mm. The common name usually used for the Arctiidae is Tiger Moths but Amata ssp. are more commonly known as Wasp or Grass Moths.

All my insect pics are single handheld shots of live specimens.

Family : Pieridae
Sub-Family : Pierinae
Species : Appias lalassis lalassis

An uncommon species that is found in Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, mainland Malaysia, and southern China. It is a montane forest species and is frequently seen puddling on damp ground.
It rarely opens its wings other than to fly but the colouration of the upper wings is basically white with a black area at the apex of the forewing together with two black spots. The spots are also on the underside of the forewing although these are usually hidden when the butterfly is at rest. The hindwing is completely white. The markings on the female are more prominent than on the male. Wingspan is around 60mm.

All my insect pics are single shot and handheld.

Thanks once again to all those who view, comment, and fav my photos. It really is appreciated.
