Family : Pieridae
Sub-Family : Pierinae
Species : Delias pasithoe pasithoe
This beautiful and very colourful species is distributed from India, through Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and parts of Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, and southern China. It is a medium-large butterfly with a wingspan of 65-80mm. It is essentially an open forest species but is also found along river banks and grassy meadows. Males are sometimes seen puddling and both sexes visit flowers for nectar.
Females lay their eggs in batches of 50-60 eggs at a time. In Thailand, the larval foodplants that are recorded are species of Loranthaceae. However, elsewhere, numerous foodplants are used, Dendrotrophe and Santalum sp (Santalaceae) - the Sandalwoods, and members of Budlejaceae, Rubiceae and Theaceae. The larvae are considered a pest in Sandalwood plantations.
All my insect pics are single, handheld shots of live insects in wild situations.

Family : Lycaenidae
Sub-Family : Polyommatinae
Species : Leptotes plinius
This species is widespread across south and south east Asia extending as far as China. There are wet and dry season forms but both are very similar with the dry form being just a little paler in colour. It is a small butterfly with a wingspan up to 23mm. The upperside of the male is a puplish-blue while the female is brown with white markings. The underside of both sexes is similar.
Preferred habitat seems to be open woodland where the larvae feed on plants of the Legume family, Plumbaginaceae and some of the citrus family Rutaceae. They are also seen, like this one, puddling on the banks of mountain streams.
All my insect pics are single shot and handheld, usually in the wild.

Species : Cepora nadina nadina
Cepora nadina is distributed from Sri Lanka, through India, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, southern China, and parts of Malaysia and Indonesia. It is a medium sized butterfly with a wingspan of 45-55mm. Habitat is sparse vegetation and open areas within primary and secondary forest up to an altitude of around 1200m asl. Males are eager puddlers at damp places like the edges of streams etc and have a strong attraction to urine. They are also quite nervous and easily distrubed.
Females are less commonly seen and after mating lay their eggs singly on the host plants. The eggs are tower-like and ribbed. Larval foodplants are Crateva and other Capparis species (Capparidaeceae).
All my insect pics are single, handheld shots of live insects.

I first saw this species in 2015 and was lucky enough to see it again last year. It is still one of the most beautiful butterflies I have ever seen.
This tiny hairstreak has a wing length of just around 10-12mm and so you can only see the intricate pattern on the underside of this amazing butterfly when you view it through your macro lens or on a computer. When it is in amongst other 'puddling' Lycaenidaes you can barely distinguish it from the other species unless you have exceptional eyesight. The upperside is rather plain in comparison to the intricate markings of the underside, just a patternless purple-brown. However the upperside is rarely seen as this butterfly keeps its wings firmly closed when not in flight.
It is a rare butterfly and distribution is limited from NE India through Myanmar to northern Thailand where it is recorded in only a few localities. Other Catapaecilma species are recorded in northern Thailand and further south through Malaysia and on to the Philippines but none of them are quite as impressive as this one. Recorded foodplant for one of the other Catapaecilma sp. is from the family Combretaceae and that may be the plant family also used by C.subochrea but as far as I know there has been no research done on this subject.

Species : Polyura jalysus jalysus

This species is similar to some other Polyura species but the distinguishing feature is the much larger blue/green panel. It is much less common than the other Nawabs but is found in Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and parts of Malaysia and Indonesia. It gets its common name from the large yellow panels on the upperside but unfortunately we don't often see these as the species only rarely opens its wings. The yellow panels correspond with the blue/green panels on the underside and are bordered by black. Quite why it is called 'Indian' I don't know as the species is not found in India. It is a medium-large butterfly with a wingspan of 50-65mm and a rapid, powerful flight.
Polyura jalysus is found in forested areas at elevations between sea level and about 600 metres. Males are fond of puddling on damp ground and like other Polyura species they are fairly oblivious to humans when feeding in this way. If they are disturbed they will fly off only to return when they think that danger has passed. They are not usually seen until late morning or early afternoon.
