My garden, Swindon, U.K.

Order : Coleoptera
Family : Staphylinidae

I think this is a Rove beetle (Staphylinidae family) but I can't determine which one. Any help in establishing a positive ID would be much appreciated.

Ob Khan NP, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Family : Vespidae
Sub-Family : Polistinae
Species : Polistes sp.

The Polistes genus is one of the most common types of paper wasp. They are predatory and consume mainly caterpillars. They build free-hanging nests constructed out of wood and saliva in sheltered locations. Unlike other social wasps nests, Polistes sp. do not have an outer envelope covering their nest, and they have a much smaller nest with just a single tier of cells. Although these wasps are not normally aggresssive they can attack if they think their nest is under threat.
The individual above was quite large, maybe about 25mm in length. It looks similar to some north American species but this one was of course seen in Thailand. If anyone is able to give me a more positive ID it would be appreciated.

All my insect pics are single shot and handheld, usually in the wild.

Doi Suthep-Pui NP, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Order : Orthoptera
Family : Acrididae
Subfamily : Oxyinae

Grasshoppers from the Oxyinae subfamily are widespread across Africa, the southern half of Asia, and Australasia. There is a large number of species and I have not been able to identify the individual pictured here. I'm not sure if he is a nymph or a young adult whose colours have not fully developed. I suspect that when mature the yellowy colours will turn green, similar to the colour of the tibia.

All my insect pics are single, handheld shots of live insects.
