A tiny skipper found in India and throughout much of South East Asia, stretching as far eastwards as China. Distribution tends to be localised and it is easily confused with some Potanthus species. It has a typical 'hopping' flight and when at rest holds its wings closed or half open when basking in the sun. The upper wings are dark brown with golden-yellow markings, the female tending to be paler than the male. Wingspan is 20-25mm.
Habitat is around forest edges at low to medium altitudes and where there is plenty of sunlight as this species loves to bask.

You know how it goes, you see a shot and try to catch that moment and ninetynine times out of a hundred it doesn't work but this time I think it did. I set out to capture the sparkling reflections of the small stream behind the butterfly and it came out even better than I had anticipated. I am really pleased with this shot and it will be interesting to see if you like it too.
Arnetta atkinsoni is a small skipper with a wingspan of just 25-28mm and is distributed from north-east India, through Myanmar, northern Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. It flies all year around and although multivoltine is still quite rare. Unfortunately there is little information about the species and the individual above is the only one I have ever seen.

I had to be out of bed and on the mountain by 6.30am for this one. This subfamily of skippers are usually only seen from daybreak until the sun is up. Once the sun is high in the sky they disappear, I'm not sure where to. It was a big effort getting out of bed at that time in the morning but well worth it I think.
